Herb Elliott is a former Australian middle-distance runner who has been described as the greatest of his era. In 42 races from 1957 to 1961 he remained unbeaten over 1500m & 1 mile. He ran 17 sub-4 minute miles in an era when such a result was rare.
Elliott broke the 1 Mile World Record in Santry, Ireland on 6 August 1958; & broke the 1500m World Record in Gothenberg, Sweden on 28 August 1958. He broke the 1500m World Record again on 6 September 1960 in Rome, Italy when winning the Olympic Games gold medal.
