Australian 100 Marathon Club Member
Born Mazam Zobinow in the Cossack village of Ilovskya, he was called George by his mother after a tenth century Mongolian warrior hero. His father took him to a military academy in early 1942, with graduates expected to join the Russian Army when they were 18.
The school was taken by a German unit in late 1943 with all students being transferred to the Matthausen concentration camp. Once there they were given the choice of joining the Reich to fight the communists or remain where they were. The cadets were stationed first near Linz & later Eger where some tried to sabotage German efforts. All were moved to Berlin & used to man anti-aircraft batteries on supply trains.
The cadets attempted to escape into the Austrian Alps before being found by American scouts & handed over to a Polish army unit. After time in a displaced persons camp Sodbinow booked passage to Australia where he worked unpaid in return for food & accomodation.
Following naturalisation as an Australian he joined the army in August 1956 where he passed the parachute course to become one of Australia’s pioneer freefallers. He served until his discharge in 1987 at 57 years of age. After leaving the army he joined the State Emergency Service.
In 1988 he was part of a team of 14 “middle aged blokes” who pulled a Sheffield railway trolley 4,253km from Perth to Sydney in 37 days.
