Australian 100 Marathon Club Member
John Kenneth “Ken” Matchett ran his first marathon at age 57. He was the foundation president of the Melbourne Marathon Spartans’ Club & a keen masters athlete who set an Australian 10000m age group record & a world 2000m Steeplechase age group record at the 2007 Australian Masters Athletics Championships in Hobart.
Matchett studied for a Diploma in Applied Chemistry at Melbourne Technical College & went to work as an industrial chemist researching camouflage paint for aircraft. He joined the army in 1941 & served with the infantry & then the Signal Corps.
After leaving the army he completed a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University, followed by a Bachelor of Arts, a Diploma of Education with Honours, & a Bachelor of Education. His career as a science teacher commenced in 1950. In 1964 he established an amateur radio club for the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind & later set up radio stations on Norfolk Island & Nauru.
From 1967 he trained to be a pilot, obtaining his private pilot’s licence before later obtaining a commercial pilot’s licence. He devised a course on the scientific principles of flying & conducted a course on the theory of navigation for trainee pilots at the Royal Victorian Aero Club.
He was appointed the Director of Education for Nauru in 1971. After returning to Australia in 1975 he was head of the Education Department’s Teachers’ Centre at La Trobe University, a position he held until his retirement in 1984.
